Graham Marshall, a successful Madison Avenue executive, has paid his dues in full. With one thing to look forward to: a well-deserved promotion, this talented and dedicated worker has struggled through growing bills and a nagging wife. In response to a loud-mouthed yuppie associate being promoted, Graham takes out his frustration on a panhandler who becomes entangled in the route of an oncoming subway train, resulting in his death by pushing him into the path of the train. With an altogether new perspective on his difficulties, he comes up with a completely different solution. First, he stages a "accident" for his obnoxious wife to distract her. Then he causes yet another "mishap" for his superior. It appears as though the world is once again Graham's oyster... All of that may be changed, though, by a lost cigarette lighter and a nosy police detective.
