In1953, a sensitive French child learns his family is Jewish from a neighbor. A physician, François Grimbert peels back the layers of his family's past that led to his tough upbringing as a Catholic child raised by "Aryan"-looking parents. When he was growing up, his athletic father worked hard to eradicate the traditional Jewish traits he saw in his son, and to protect the family's numerous secrets from the Gestapo after most of his relatives had fought in the war and been sent to concentration camps.
