Han van Meegeren is a young and skilled artist who stands out in the early 1920s Amsterdam art scene as a rebel. Because he paints in the style of his idols Rembrandt and Vermeer, critics consider his art to be out of date, and they label him a "copycat" of the masters. To make a point, he creates a phony Vermeer painting and attempts to pass it off as the genuine one. It is effective. Instead of disclosing the truth and causing embarrassment to the art community, he continues to profit from his numerous forgeries. Soon after, he becomes entangled in a web of lies and treachery, and his life begins to spiral out of control. He is surprised when high-ranking Nazi Hermann Göring comes to his home, asking for a Vermeer for his personal collection...
