9th Company
The film begins in late 1988 in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, where military trainees Petrovsky, Ryaba, Chugun, Stas, Pinochet, Lyutev, and Vorobyev are beaten into shape at a training camp by the violent, sadistic commander, Warrant Officer Dygalo, before being transferred to the front lines. After several one-on-one liaisons with Snow White, the local whore, and a lecture on the history, geography, and culture of Afghanistan (during which most of the men fall asleep), the trainees depart for battle, first to the Bagram air base, and then to the Afghani province of Khost to secure supply lines. But nothing can even begin to prepare them for the horrible catastrophe into which they are thrown, or the relentless flow of slaughter that scatters tens of thousands of Soviet victims in its wake.
