Gary and his companions, who are into gaming, Renaissance fairs, and other nefarious vices, stumble upon a rare medieval board game named "13 Demons." They learn the game has a terrible history, having been banned from the majority of countries for bizarre and unknown reasons, including unexplained fatalities related to the game. The goal is to liberate the Realm of Darkhaven from the Apocalypse's 13 Demons. They dismiss it as urban legend and continue playing; nevertheless, what they are unaware of is that the 13 Demons currently roam the Earth dressed as people. The game slowly swallows them, convincing them that they are "The Golden Paladins" on a noble mission to save the world. However, when the news reports a series of local killings caused by assailants clad in body armor using tree branches, baseball bats, and hammers, the thin line between truth and imagination is destroyed, and the horrifying realization that they are in way over their heads sets in.
